My Classroom

Along with following the North Carolina curriculum for 7th grade science, our school utilizes the Core Knowledge Sequence for grades K-8. This additional curriculum provides students with the foundation they will need to succeed in college and beyond.

Understanding how to stay organized is a challenge for many 7th grade students. I try to help them with this as much as possible by providing them with organization tools like this classroom calendar. I also give them a paper version to keep in their binder. Every week we look at the calendar as a group and review any important test dates or project deadlines.

The 100's club is a motivational incentive I provide to students who earn a 100% on any quiz or test. At the end of each trimester I will hold a pizza party for students that have earned a spot in the club. I have had many former students tell me that they really enjoyed this aspect of my class because it gave them a goal to work toward and were proud to have their name card displayed in class when they earned a 100%.

Although the layout of my classroom is very traditional, I try to utilize the space in unique ways. The student desks are easily rearranged in partner pairs for labs or group work. Additionally, I will sometimes organize the desks into a circle to facilitate class discussions or debates.

Each day I post important information about the lesson in the same spot on my white board. This allows students to understand the objective for the day, or the information they should understand by the end of the lesson. I also give students a brief agenda, which helps them stay on track and focused during the class period.

The homework board is a another resource I provide for students to help them with organization and time management. Every Monday I will post the homework for the week in my classroom, as well as on my website.
